To promote adventure tourism in Maharashtra, the state's tourism department is set to acquire the decommissioned naval warship INS Guldar, which will be deliberately sunk near the Nivati Rocks, off the coast of Vengurla in Sindhudurg District, to create an artificial reef.

This will be India's first artificial reef of its kind, aimed at enhancing the region's appeal as a scuba diving destination. Currently, Malvan in Sindhudurg is promoted as a diving hub by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), which also operates a diving school.

INS Guldar, an 83-metre-long Kumbhir-class landing ship, was built in Poland and commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1985. The Navy has generously provided the vessel free of cost. Initially, the state government had sought INS Vikrant for this project, but the Navy requested payment for the vessel.
World NGO Day is observed annually on February 27. The theme for World NGO Day 2025 is “Empowering Grassroots Movements for a Sustainable Future.”

A dishwasher-sized NASA satellite, weighing about 200 kg and measuring approximately 3.5 meters, was launched into space from Florida on February 26, 2025, to identify the presence of water—a crucial resource for lunar missions—on the Moon’s surface, particularly in permanently shadowed craters at its poles.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried the Lunar Trailblazer spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin’s space division, as a secondary payload. The primary payload aboard the rocket was a lunar lander mission led by Intuitive Machines.

The Moon’s South Pole contains hundreds of craters whose bottoms remain permanently shadowed, possibly holding ice patches. Additionally, some water may be locked inside broken rock and dust on the lunar surface.

Lunar water is believed to originate from multiple sources:

- Solar wind, consisting of charged particles from the Sun, could react with lunar minerals to create water.

- Comets and meteorites may have delivered water to the Moon over billions of years.

The exact amount of lunar water remains uncertain, but estimates suggest it could be hundreds of millions of tons.
Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal launched a series of major initiatives under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) to modernize India’s maritime infrastructure, strengthen its global trade presence, and promote sustainability.

He launched the ‘One Nation-One Port Process (ONOP)’, an initiative to standardize and streamline operations across India’s major ports. This step aims to eliminate inconsistencies in documentation and processes that lead to inefficiencies, increased costs, and operational delays.

Additionally, he launched:

- Sagar Ankalan – the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for FY 2023-24.

- Bharat Global Ports Consortium, aimed at strengthening global trade by expanding India’s maritime reach and enhancing trade resilience.

- MAITRI logo (Master Application for International Trade and Regulatory Interface) to streamline trade processes, reduce bureaucratic redundancies, and expedite clearances, reinforcing India’s commitment to ease of doing business.

MAITRI plays a crucial role in operationalizing the ‘Virtual Trade Corridor’ (VTC) between India and the UAE. The initiative aligns with the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and is expected to expand to BIMSTEC and ASEAN nations, leveraging AI and Blockchain for efficiency and security.

He also announced the India Maritime Week, to be held from October 27 to 31, 2025, in Mumbai, celebrating the country’s ‘Maritime Virasat’ (Maritime Heritage) and ‘Maritime Vikas’ (Maritime Development). The event, a bi-annual global maritime gathering, will be one of the largest in the world. It will host the:

- 4th edition of the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS)
- 2nd edition of Sagarmanthan

The event is expected to have representation from 100 countries and 100,000 delegates.

Finally, he launched the National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) website, which will offer insights and best practices for green port and shipping operations. This platform will focus on reducing carbon footprints, promoting cleaner fuels, and implementing eco-friendly port management to drive a more sustainable future.
