The ambitious Cheetah Reintroduction Project in India is set to expand beyond Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh, where the first batch of African cheetahs was introduced in 2022.

At the seventh National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) meeting, PM Modi announced that the project will now extend to Banni Grasslands in Gujarat and Gandhisagar Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.

Cheetahs were officially declared extinct in India in 1952 due to habitat loss and excessive hunting. The first batch of eight cheetahs arrived from Namibia in September 2022, followed by a second batch of 12 cheetahs translocated from South Africa in February 2023.

Since their arrival, seven adult cheetahs have died due to various reasons, including septicemia. However, the project has seen successful reproduction, with 17 cubs born, of which 12 have survived.

On March 3, 2025, India's first-ever estimate of Gangetic dolphins, the country's only riverine dolphin species, recorded a population of 6,327 in the Ganga River and its tributaries. Additionally, the survey identified three Indus river dolphins, a closely related species.

The survey, initiated in 2021, covered a total distance of 8,507 km, with the highest number of dolphins observed in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam.

Counting river dolphins is uniquely challenging compared to land animals like tigers or elephants. Researchers conducted the survey by traveling in boats at a constant speed, using acoustic hydrophones (underwater microphones) to detect dolphin sounds.

The next survey is expected to be conducted in four years, while fishing net entanglement remains one of the biggest threats to the species.

The government further announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Human-Wildlife Conflict Management at SACON, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Additionally, PM Modi unveiled a book on river dolphins, emphasizing the importance of conserving aquatic biodiversity and protecting endangered freshwater species.

The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) is a statutory advisory body consisting of 47 members, including PM Modi as the ex-officio chairperson. It also includes the Chief of Army Staff as a member.

The central government has approved over ₹2,900 crore under Project Lion, aimed at ensuring the long-term conservation of Asiatic lions, which are exclusively found in Gujarat. The Greater Gir region remains their primary habitat, supported by multiple conservation projects.
