Gyanesh Kumar assumed office as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India on February 19, 2025. A 1988-batch Kerala cadre officer of the Indian Administrative Service, Mr. Kumar retired as Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation on January 31, 2024.

His appointment as CEC was announced following a meeting of the Prime Minister-led selection panel, which included Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. His tenure as CEC will extend until January 2029.

Mr. Kumar is the first CEC appointed under the provisions of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Term of Office) Act, 2023.

This law was enacted after the Supreme Court, in its March 2023 ruling, mandated the formation of a selection panel consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

However, when the law was passed, the Centre replaced the CJI with a Union Minister in the panel, thereby giving the Central government a dominant role in the appointment process.

Additionally, on the same day, Vivek Joshi, a former Haryana cadre IAS officer, assumed office as an Election Commissioner. The three-member Election Commission now comprises CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Vivek Joshi.
Meta has announced its most ambitious subsea cable project yet—Project Waterworth, a multi-billion-dollar initiative spanning over 50,000 km, making it longer than Earth's circumference.

Once completed, it will be the world’s longest subsea cable project, connecting five continents, including the US, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

Subsea cables play a crucial role in global communication, carrying over 95% of intercontinental internet traffic. Meta has been a key player in infrastructure innovation, having developed more than 20 subsea cables over the past decade.

Project Waterworth will operate at depths of up to 7,000 meters and employ enhanced burial techniques in high-risk fault areas to prevent damage from ship anchors and other hazards.

On February 16, 2025, PM Modi announced that the government will constitute a Deregulation Commission to further reduce the role of the state in governance.

He stated that the government has already eliminated hundreds of compliances, and through Jan Vishwas 2.0, even more archaic regulations are being removed to enhance the ease of doing business.

Highlighting various reforms, Modi mentioned significant progress in property rights through the launch of the Svamitva Yojana.

Introduced on National Panchayati Raj Day (April 24, 2020), the SVAMITVA Scheme aims to drive the economic transformation of rural India by providing property owners in village Abadi areas with a 'Record of Rights'.
The Brazilian government has announced that the next BRICS summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025. As the new chair of the bloc, Brazil will lead BRICS until the end of 2025.

One of the key topics on the agenda will be the establishment of an alternative payment system independent of the US dollar, a move that has drawn criticism from former US President Donald Trump, who has threatened steep tariffs on BRICS nations if they attempt to undermine the dollar’s dominance.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE. The bloc was originally founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010.

In 2023, BRICS expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, with Saudi Arabia invited to join. Recently, Indonesia became the 11th full member, while Nigeria was designated as a "partner country" under a new category introduced at the 2024 Kazan Summit.

Several other countries, including Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia, have applied for membership, reflecting BRICS' growing influence as a counterbalance to the G7 industrialized nations.

Partner countries, such as Nigeria, will be invited to attend the Rio summit and may participate in additional BRICS meetings based on consensus among the member states.

India's first research center dedicated to conserving the endangered Gangetic river dolphin, the National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC), has finally become a reality. Located near the Ganga River in Patna, the institute was inaugurated on March 4, 2024, by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The project was approved in 2013. In 2020, CM Kumar laid the foundation stone for a new centre, and the funds for its construction were sanctioned.

The Gangetic river dolphin is India's national aquatic animal and is classified as a Schedule I species under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. It has been declared an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Gangetic river dolphin is one of only four freshwater dolphin species in the world. The other three are found in:

- The Yangtze River in China (now extinct)
- The Indus River in Pakistan
- The Amazon River in South America

This species is found in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Being blind, it relies on echolocation to navigate and hunt in river waters. Bihar is home to around half of the estimated 3,000 Gangetic dolphins in India.
