In October 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognized India for eliminating "trachoma" as a public health problem. This achievement is the result of decades of efforts, beginning with the National Trachoma Control Program in 1963, which included surgeries, antibiotic treatments, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives. Trachoma, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is one of the leading causes of global blindness.
