The Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 has been awarded to Han Kang, a prominent South Korean author, in recognition of her intense poetic prose that addresses historical traumas and unveils the fragility of human life.
Rwanda is facing its first outbreak of the Marburg virus as of late September 2024. Marburg is one of the deadliest pathogens known to humans, with Marburg virus disease (MVD) case fatality rates ranging from 24% to 88% in past outbreaks. The first outbreak occurred in Marburg, Germany, in 1967, and subsequent outbreaks have mostly been reported across Africa. Marburg belongs to the filovirus family, similar to Ebola.
On October 8, 2024, India's National Space Commission approved the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (Lupex), a collaboration with Japan's JAXA. Scheduled to last 100 days, Lupex aims to explore water resources on the Moon. This mission follows the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 in August 2023, which made India the fourth nation to achieve a lunar landing.
In October 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognized India for eliminating "trachoma" as a public health problem. This achievement is the result of decades of efforts, beginning with the National Trachoma Control Program in 1963, which included surgeries, antibiotic treatments, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives. Trachoma, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is one of the leading causes of global blindness.
